Flight tracking site FlightAware noted that tens of thousands of flights had to be delayed over the weekend from Friday (31/10) to Sunday (2/11) due to the absence of air traffic controllers (ATC).

A total of 2,282 flights also had to be canceled due to the same problem.
On Monday (3/11), FlightAware again noted that the number of delayed flights in the US reached more than 4,000.As many as 600 flights were also canceled at major airports such as Chicago O’Hare, Dallas Fort Worth, Denver and Newark.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) acknowledged that there was a spike in staff absences, forcing it to reduce air traffic in the US to maintain safety standards.
The FAA also urged that the shutdown stop immediately so that staff can return to being paid and working as usual.
“The shutdown must be stopped so that controllers receive their wages and travelers can avoid disruption and delays,” the FAA said in a statement on Friday, as quoted

Transport Minister Sean Duffy meanwhile told CBS News that such delays would continue to ensure flight safety.
Duffy said that even if ATC staff used their free time to work elsewhere, they would not be fired.
“When they decide to feed their families, I’m not going to fire them,” he said.
The US government has experienced a shutdown for 35 days as of Tuesday (4/11).Shutdown is a condition when some federal government agencies have to stop operating because Congress fails to approve a spending budget.
Votes on spending bills repeatedly failed to pass because Democrats insisted that the passed budget include health subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of this year.
At least 670,000 federal employees have been furloughed in the wake of the shutdown.Meanwhile, around 730,000 employees are currently working without pay.
