Fire
hit a nightclub in Arpora, North Goa District,
India
, in the early hours of Sunday (7/12), killed at least 23 people including four tourists.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said three of the victims died from burns, while the rest died due to asphyxiation.In his statement on the X platform, Sawant called the incident a “very sad day for Goa”.
“I have visited the scene and ordered an investigation. This is a tragic incident that should never have happened,” Sawant was quoted as saying

He emphasized that the business was operating without proper permits and threatened to take strict action against those who were negligent.
Video footage released by the Press Trust of India (PTI) shows rescue teams evacuating injured victims and bodies on stretchers through the narrow stone steps of the Birch nightclub.Police, medical personnel and residents were seen crowding the area around the scene.
Local media citing a police statement reported that the fire was allegedly sparked by a ‘gas cylinder explosion’.However, further investigations are still being carried out to determine the exact cause.
Fires in public facilities and residential areas often occur in India, mainly due to poor building standards, overcrowded areas and weak implementation of safety regulations.
Regional legislator Michael Lobo said authorities would carry out fire safety audits at all similar entertainment venues to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
