in North Sumatra Province (

) damaged due to flash floods and landslides in a number of districts/cities, some of them even
crop failure
(puso).
As of December 6, the North Sumatra Provincial Government (Pemprov) and the Ministry of Agriculture identified that of the 38 thousand ha affected, 5,570 ha had failed harvests.Estimated losses to farmers reached IDR 1.132 trillion.

“This collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture is the government’s commitment to minimize the negative impact of disasters on food security and farmer welfare, as well as speed up the recovery process for affected areas,” said Acting Regional Secretary of North Sumatra Province Sulaiman Harahap, Monday (8/12).
Sulaiman said that in Central Tapanuli Regency (Tapteng), rice fields turned into stretches of land after being hit by floods, and required a lot of time and money to be put back into use.
“Support from the Ministry of Agriculture can range from rehabilitation to the creation of new rice fields,” he explained.
Acting Head of the East Sumatra Food Security, Food Crops and Horticulture Service, Tumanggor, added that a number of commodities whose land was affected by flooding and puso include rice, nursery rice, corn, cassava, horticulture and irrigation networks.
“The estimated potential loss of production reaches 118,526 tons, with a loss value of IDR 1.132 trillion. Data collection on affected rice fields continues to be carried out. We are coordinating with districts/cities to allocate post-disaster seed assistance for 1,500 hectares from the provincial government and 40 thousand hectares from the Ministry of Agriculture,” he said.
Meanwhile, Expert Staff to the Minister of Agriculture for Agricultural Infrastructure, Ali Jamil, said that the Ministry of Agriculture would help rehabilitate rice fields affected by floods and landslides in accordance with regulations.
“For seeds, the Minister of Agriculture (Amran Sulaiman) has prepared aid. Likewise, food aid has been sent to three provinces affected by the disaster, West Sumatra, North Sumatra and Aceh, which was sent by sea. For North Sumatra, aid was sent by ship and will dock at Belawan Harbor,” he said.
