Here are five major fires in tall buildings in the world:
1. Torch Tower Dubai
This incident in Dubai occurred on August 3 2011.One of the tallest buildings there, the Torch Tower, was engulfed in flames starting from the 86th floor, causing a stir among people who witnessed it on the surrounding streets.
It was recorded that properties worth millions of dollars in the building were destroyed by fire.
This 79-story residential building was inaugurated four years ago.Luckily there were no fatalities.
“This is an iconic building, many people watched this fire from their balconies, even though it happened at 03:00 (local time),” said a witness.Meanwhile, another witness said the fire in the building was like “the Titanic sinking slowly”, as quoted
Gulfnews.com.
2. Joelma in São Paulo
February 1, 1974 was the most fateful day for the Joelma Building in São Paulo, Brazil.A massive fire in the building killed at least 179 people.Quoted from the Guardian, the fire started from an electrical short circuit in the air conditioning unit.
Clara Lucia Dias Gomes, 27, was one of the first people to smell the smoke and managed to get onto the street.
“When I got there, the fire was already burning in the building,” he said.”People were already running out of the windows.”
It took firefighters up to 20 minutes to reach the office building, as they slowly made their way through increasingly severe traffic jams in the city center.Helicopters were deployed, but at least 20 people died while waiting for evacuation – the roof was completely unfit to land on.
3. Hotel Winecoff, Georgia, USA
The fire that occurred in the early hours of December 7, 1946, was one of the largest fires in the United States.
The Winecoff Hotel fire in the state of Georgia killed 119 people. At the time of the incident the building did not have emergency stairs, emergency doors, or sprinklers.
For two and a half hours, Atlanta firefighters and other crews from nearby cities fought valiantly in the cold to save most of the 280 guests.
However, their ladder only reached the eighth floor and their net was not strong enough to withstand a jump of more than 70 feet. Therefore, many guests died on the sidewalk and in the alley behind the building.
Thirty of the 119 victims were among Georgia’s most outstanding high school students, who had come to Atlanta to attend the YMCA Youth Assembly at the Capitol, as quoted from the site georgiahistory.com.
4. Grenfell Tower, London
The BBC website wrote, “the fire that destroyed Grenfell Tower in June 2017 was one of Britain’s worst modern disasters”.This incident occurred on June 14, 2017 before 01:00.The fire broke out in the kitchen of a flat on the fourth floor of the 23-storey tower block in North Kensington, West London.
Within minutes, the fire had spread to the outside of the building and spread to all four sides.By 03.00, most of the upper floors had burned down.Seventy-two people died.
The years-long investigation cited “decades of failure” by the government and the construction industry to allow the use of flammable materials in buildings.
5. The Station, Rhode Island
The Station nightclub at 211 Cowesett Avenue, West Warwick, Rhode Island, USA, burned down on the night of February 20, 2003.
The incident was triggered by the band performing that night using fireworks that ignited the polyurethane foam insulation covering the walls and ceiling of the stage.
The fire spread quickly along the ceiling area above the dance floor.Smoke was visible at the exit in a little over a minute, and flames were visible through part of the roof in less than five minutes.Egress from the nightclub, which was not equipped with sprinklers, was hampered by crowds at the building’s main entrance.
One hundred people lost their lives in the fire.Of the fatalities, 95 were due to occupants’ inability to evacuate before being overcome by untenable conditions along the exit route.
