“When we woke up, we found our baby drenched in rain and buffeted by the wind, and the little girl suddenly died of cold,” he told Reuters.
According to the Al Jazeera website, until now hundreds of thousands of Palestinian families in Gaza have taken shelter in fragile tents.
Gaza’s civil defense agency also struggled to deal with the situation, as it received more than 2,500 calls during 24 hours.
The news agency reported that three buildings also collapsed in Gaza City due to Hurricane Byron.
Meanwhile, tents and other winter equipment are blocked at the border as Israel continues to restrict aid flows to the region.
Israeli human rights group B’Tselem said more than 6,500 trucks were currently awaiting permission from Israel to enter Gaza.
The trucks carry essential winter gear, including tents, blankets, warm clothing and cleaning supplies.
The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) also said that only around 15,600 tents had been brought to Gaza since the ceasefire came into effect last October.
Journalist from Al Jazeera, Hani Mahmoud, reporting from Gaza City, now many families are leaving the port area because of strong winds on Thursday (11/12).
“They are trying to go deeper into Gaza City, to take shelter in one of the buildings that is still intact, at least for tonight,” he said.
As dusk fell, Mahmoud said many families faced a difficult night.
“In addition to every other struggle people have experienced over the past two years, there is now another battle with the forces of nature.”.
Meanwhile, Head of Communications at UNICEF Palestine, Jonathan Crickx, said the scale of the disaster was “enormous.”
He also warned of a looming health disaster due to children wandering around in tents barefoot.
“What we fear is that hygiene is very poor, and heavy rain can trigger water-borne diseases such as acute diarrhea,” he said.
Spokesperson for United Nations (UN) Chief Antonio Guterres, Farhan Haq, also warned that many children could die from hypothermia.
“That’s why we need to make sure we can send warm clothes, tents, tarpaulins and shelters [to Gaza],” Haq said.
He also added that the UN humanitarian office has now processed more than 160 flood alerts since Thursday (11/12) morning when Hurricane Byron hit the region.
