A total of nine farmers were struck
thunder
and four of them died on the spot while taking shelter in a hut in the middle of the rice fields of Badamusalam Village, Serang,
Banten
, Tuesday (2/12).
The unfortunate incident occurred in the afternoon, at around 17.15 WIT, when the area was hit by rain accompanied by thunder.

“The scene of the incident was precisely a hut in the middle of the rice fields of Badamusalam Village. There were residents who died and were injured, allegedly as a result of being struck by lightning,” said Kasemen Police Chief, Inspector Ahmad Nasihin, in an official statement delivered by Serkot Police Public Relations, Tuesday (2/12).
The incident started when nine farmers who were cleaning grass and weeds in the rice fields took shelter in a hut in the middle of the rice fields, because of heavy rain.
The rain, accompanied by thunder, apparently hit the farmers who were taking shelter.Luckily, one person was aware and immediately asked the residents of Badamusalam Village for help.
“One of the victims named Samsin was still able to wake up and run and immediately reported it to Syarif Hidayat, Head of RT 001,” he explained.
The residents then flocked to the hut in the middle of the rice fields, then evacuated the eight farmers who were lying down.
The dead and injured victims were evacuated to Serang City Hospital and Dr Dradjat Prawiranegara Regional Hospital using vehicles belonging to local residents.
“Residents helped evacuate the victims and immediately took the victims to the Serang City Regional Hospital and Dr. Drajat Prawiranegara Regional Hospital for immediate care and treatment, using cars belonging to local residents,” he explained.
The following are the identities of the victims killed by lightning strikes:
1) Abdul Holik (Serang City Hospital).
2) Sailan (Dr Dradjat Prawiranegara Hospital).
3) Awaludin (Serang City Hospital).
4) Rofei (Serang City Hospital).
