Modern Cikande, Serang Regency, Banten, as a special zone of Cesium-137 radiation (CS-137).
Coordinating Minister for Food Division Zulkifli Hasan alias Zulhas said this status was applied to accelerate the decontamination steps after radioactive material was identified as a source of pollution that previously caused the rejection of Indonesian shrimp products in the US.
“The task force ensured that the CS-137 contamination only occurred in Cikande, not in the national and export supply chains. Therefore, we today set Cikande as a special event for CS-137 radionuclide radiation so that we can accelerate quickly handling,” Zulhas said at a press conference at the Ministry of Food, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (30/9).

The CS-137 handling task force is tasked with coordinating the investigation, decontamination, and the health protection of workers and the community.

On the same occasion, Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol explained that the smelting process was the entrance to contamination.
“This is the source of pollutants. So he processes scrap with the induction method. Then the pollution flies and sticks to many, including the shrimp earlier. But because of that there is a little entering the shrimp body,” he said.
So far, six points of contamination in the Cikande region have been identified.Two of them have been decontaminated, while the other points are still in the process of re -mapping.
The government also implemented a one-door system in and out in the industrial area, complete with the radiation checks of each vehicle.The material detected carrying CS-137 is immediately parked and cleaned before exiting.
Health checks on 1,562 workers and local residents show nine PMT employees exposed to CS-137.
Employees who are exposed have received intensive care from the Ministry of Health, including special drugs brought in from Singapore.
The government emphasized that there was no serious impact on the wider community outside the industrial area.
In addition, the government secured 14 metal scrap containers in Tanjung Priok which was contaminated with CS-137, followed by nine additional containers that were immediately exported to the Philippines, the country of origin of the used iron.
“If the container enters the shrimp load, it can be contaminated with the shrimp. What will fit, what else will be dangerous. So we do an export,” said Zulhas.
Official communication has been carried out with the World Atomic Agency (IAEA), the United States government, and other international parties.
The government also prepared a long -term plan in the form of permanent radioactive waste storage facilities that were planned to be completed in 2026.
This case began with the rejection of Indonesian frozen shrimp at the American port in August 2025 after the local authority detected CS-137 radiation.
