Based on observations on Saturday (6/12), the water level receded until it was only as high as an adult’s calf or around 30 cm.
Sand, stones and logs are carried by the current and pile up on the riverbed, changing the shape of the flow path.

Likewise, it can be seen that the border of the Uamg river appears wider than the remaining water flow.Meanwhile, the middle part of the river now resembles land due to landslide material that filled the river bed.
One of the residents of Sibola Julu, Sonia, said that the high intensity of rain on November 25-27 had increased the water discharge which then carried landslide material from the hills downstream.
According to him, the material was carried to the bottom of the settlement until it filled up most of the river bed.
“Now the river resembles land and residents can cross it on foot. Even though before the incident the flow was deep,” said Sonia.
Shallowing of rivers triggers river overflows when it rains
According to Sonia, the buildup of material causes the river to become shallow, making it easy for the water flow to overflow when it rains.
This condition triggered floods that submerged roads and inundated settlements at several points around the Aek Godang River on the Sibolga-Central Tapanuli route.
This situation forced a number of residents to flee for several days to the HKBP Sibolga Julu Church Hall in Angin Nauli Village.
They chose to stay temporarily in refugee camps because they were worried about subsequent floods or new landslides from the hilly areas.
Sonia hopes that normalization of river flows can be carried out immediately so that similar disasters do not occur again in the future.
As of this weekend, the Sibolga Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) recorded that around 700 residents had taken refuge in the church hall during the emergency period.
However, on the 12th day after the disaster, they started to return to their homes after the rain stopped and the water flow gradually returned to normal.
