Airbus’ announcement was broadcast when around 3,000 A320 aircraft were in the air. This notification is addressed to more than 350 aircraft operators, including airlines from Indonesia.
A number of global airlines have warned of the potential for flight delays or cancellations as a result of this notification.
American Airlines, the largest A320 operator in the world, said around 340 of its 480 A320 aircraft needed repairs. The airline estimates that the repairs will be completed on Saturday (29/11), with a repair time of approximately two hours for each aircraft.
Lufthansa from Germany, Indigo from India, and easyJet from England have also issued warnings that they will temporarily stop operating A320 aircraft for repairs.
Colombian airline Avianca meanwhile said more than 70 percent of its fleet was affected by the recall. Therefore, Avianca has stopped selling tickets for travel until December 8.
Currently, approximately 11,300 A320 family jets are in service worldwide.Four of the world’s 10 largest A320 family operators are US airlines American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and United Airlines.
Chinese, European and Indian airlines are also the jet’s biggest customers.Indonesia also has several Airbus A320 jets operated by six airlines including Batik Air, Super Air Jet, Citilink Indonesia, Indonesia Airasia, Pelita Air, and Transnusa.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (Ditjen Hubud) of the Ministry of Transportation has instructed all operators to ensure that A320 aircraft have an Aileron Elevator Computer (ELAC) that is “fit for use” before the next flight.
“This condition is expected to cause flight disruption considering the large number of A320 aircraft operating in Indonesia and similar fleets throughout the world,” said Director General of Civil Aviation, Lukman F. Laisa, in a statement on Saturday (29/11).
Mike Stengel of AeroDynamic Advisory said the recall comes at a bad time as this type of aircraft is one of the best sellers during the holiday period in the US.
“The timing is obviously not ideal as this is one of the most frequently used aircraft during holidays (in the US),” Stengel said, as quoted

Luckily the repair time didn’t take days because the jet could be repaired while it was parked or inspected.
This is one of the largest recalls Airbus has experienced in its history.According to Airbus, there was a software problem after solar radiation damaged important data in the flight control system.
A number of industry sources say this problem caused the crash on a JetBlue flight on October 30 en route from Cancun, Mexico, to Newark, New Jersey. At that time, several passengers were injured after the plane lost altitude sharply.
The A320 jet finally made an emergency landing in Tampa, Florida, and was immediately inspected by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).JetBlue and the FAA had no comment on the recall.
