More than 1,800 engineers experienced the bitter fate of layoffs at the retail and technology company owned by conglomerate Jeff Bezos.
Documents filed in New York, California, New Jersey and Amazon’s home state, Washington, show that 40 percent of the 4,700 layoffs were experienced by employees in engineering positions.
Amazon reported the data in its Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filed with state agencies.
This figure only represents a portion of the total layoffs in October, quoted from

The layoff decision puts Amazon among the giant US technology companies that have experienced a wave of massive layoffs this year, despite rising profits.
So far there have been at least 113 thousand layoffs in 231 technology companies, based on reports from the site Layopffs.fyi.
The wave of massive layoffs continues a trend in 2022 when businesses were hit by the Covid-19 pandemic and forced to make extreme adjustments.
Massive layoffs at Amazon continue under Executive Director (CEO) Andy Jassy who has been working for several years to transform the company’s culture into what he calls “the biggest startup in the world.”
It seeks to make Amazon much leaner and less bureaucratic by encouraging employees to work harder with fewer resources and reducing the burden on the company.
Amazon is expected to reduce employees again in January next year, quoted from

.
The company is also trying to divert human resources with greater investment into artificial intelligence (AI).
Jassy believes that technology is poised to reshape the skilled workforce. He predicts the number of employees will continue to shrink in the next few years along with increasing efficiency from AI.
Head of Human Resources Beth Galleti in a memo announcing the layoffs stated that the company was focused on the importance of innovation which must now be done with a small number of employees.
“The current generation of AI is the most transformative technology we have seen since the internet, and allows companies to innovate much faster than ever before,” Galetti wrote.
“We believe that we need to be more organized with fewer layers and more ownership, to move as quickly as possible for our customers and our business,” he added.
