China
suspend imports of seafood products from
Japan
following diplomatic tensions between the two countries sparked by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s statements regarding Taiwan.
“I would like to emphasize that as a result of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent actions, which go against the grain and his erroneous statements regarding major issues such as Taiwan, which have sparked public anger in China, in the current situation there will be no market for Japanese fishery products, even though Japan can export them to China,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Mao Ning, at a press conference in Beijing, Wednesday (19/11).
This suspension was announced amid increasing diplomatic tensions between the two countries after Takaichi stated that any Chinese military action against Taiwan could be categorized as a “survival-threatening situation.”

In his statement before the Japanese parliament on November 7, Takaichi said any attack targeting Taiwan allows Japan to “exercise the right of collective self-defense” with Taipei.
Beijing condemned the remarks and urged Tokyo to retract its remarks.
He urged Tokyo to withdraw Takaichi’s “erroneous statements” and take “concrete actions to safeguard the political foundations of bilateral relations”.
“If Japan refuses to withdraw the statement, China will take serious countermeasures, and all the consequences will be borne by Japan,” he was quoted as saying.

Earlier on Wednesday,
Kyodo News
reports China has notified Japan of plans to suspend seafood imports from that country. That information was obtained
Kyodo News
citing a Japanese government source.
Beijing’s decision comes just days after Japan’s Agriculture Minister, Norikazu Suzuki, said that Tokyo had resumed exporting fishery products to China for the first time since Beijing imposed a total ban in 2023 on the release of treated radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
Not only boycotting Japanese seafood products, China has also appealed to its citizens not to travel to Japan, causing thousands of tourists from the Bamboo Curtain country to cancel their plans to visit the country.
China has also suspended showing Japanese films in China, including anime films.
Meanwhile, Japanese government spokesman Minoru Kihara confirmed on Tuesday that Tokyo was “open to all forms of dialogue” with Beijing.
Japan even sent its top Asian affairs diplomat, Masaaki Kanai, to Beijing and in talks on Tuesday he rejected the basis of China’s travel warning.According to Kanai, the polemic between the two countries did not cause the public security situation in Japan to worsen.
Separately, the Japanese Embassy in Beijing asked Japanese citizens in China “to strive for personal safety … taking into account the situation, including local media reports regarding recent bilateral relations.”
Japanese government spokesman Minoru Kihara reiterated that Tokyo stands by the 1972 joint communiqué, in which Japan recognized China and stated that Japan “fully understands and respects” Beijing’s position that Taiwan is an “integral part” of its territory.
