The latest tale of Nick and Judy has grossed more than 3 billion yuan in box office revenue as of Dec. 7, making it the highest-grossing imported animated film in Chinese film history.
So, based on calculations as of December 7, the combined box office revenue from newly released and re-screened animated films this year has reached more than 50 percent of the total 2025 box office.
Several things are considered to be the factors that animated films have succeeded in dominating the Chinese box office, one of which is that the titles being broadcast are sequels to well-known and successful IPs, such as Ne Zha, Zootopia, and The Legend of Hei.
“So it gives the audience a sense of certainty in quality and style,” said the Chinese state media report.
Not only that, animated films are considered to provide a more stable and low-risk viewing option. These films are not patronizing or cognitively taxing on the viewer.
On the other hand, films which are certainly of good quality only use plot and characters to build a story world that the audience can enjoy safely.
China in particular is one of the countries that is also benefiting from the increasing popularity of their local animated films because these works are accompanied by innovative developments in traditional Chinese culture.
Many works are rooted in deep Chinese culture, combining traditional aesthetics with modern technology to form a unique Eastern charm and market competitiveness.
For example, Nobody combines the free brushstrokes of ink painting with the detailed precision of fine brush techniques, while Curious Tales of a Temple innovatively uses materials and methods such as mixing watercolors in its segments to mimic the texture of traditional art forms.
“This approach of adapting technology to serve aesthetic purposes allows visual spectacle to carry cultural memory and spiritual depth, thereby strengthening cultural self-confidence and a sense of identity among domestic audiences.”
“Overall, animated works in 2025 will not only succeed by capitalizing on the momentum of past achievements.”
“Rather it blazes a new trail by offering greater narrative depth, deeper emotional expression, and fresh responses that resonate with audiences.”
