Timor Leste experienced a similar case when the AFC was sanctioned from appearing in the 2024 Asian Cup qualifiers after the Secretary General of the Timor Leste Football Association (FFTL), Amandio de Araujo, was proven to have falsified the citizenship documents of the Lafaek squad players.
All matches involving 12 players with fake documents were canceled by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
“The AFC as the competition organizer will take action based on their rules. This action may be a points deduction or something like that, but we don’t know what punishment will be imposed yet.”
“They have had similar cases, so it is possible that they are following what was done to Timor Leste,” said Managing Director of Action Football Asia, Effendi Jagan Abdullah.
According to Abdullah, if the AFC punishes Malaysia by deducting points, their chances of getting to the 2027 Asian Cup could be closed and Harimau Malaya’s ranking could decline.
“If that happens, there is no chance of qualifying for the 2027 Asian Cup. The implications are very big because when the match is canceled and points are deducted, Harimau Malaya’s ranking will also be affected,” said Effendi.
Malaysian football observer, Datuk Christopher Raj, also used the Timor Leste case as a reference for the AFC.
“When it comes to cases of using ineligible players, points will indeed be deducted and the opposing team will be given three points. This is already stated in the AFC regulations and is nothing new. If we talk about further action, the action that will be taken next, we have to wait until the AFC Disciplinary Committee meets,” said Christopher.
Previously, in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifying match, the Malaysian national team was strengthened by seven players with fake documents, namely Gabriel Felipe Arrocha, Facundo Tomas Garcas, Rodrigo Julian Holgado, Imanol Javier Machuca, Joao Vitor Brandao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal Iraurgui, and Hector Alejandro Hevel Serran.
