Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM)
Bahlil Lahadalia
responding to the nickname ‘Mister Minister of Ethanol’ addressed to him.
“Everywhere I am also told that I am Mister Minister of Ethanol.
Epen huh?
?(Papuan language: is it really important?),” said Bahlil at the Bisnis Indonesia Group Conference 2025 at the Raffles Hotel, South Jakarta, Monday (8/12).
This nickname has become popular on social media because of the discourse on the application of 10 percent ethanol to fuel oil (BBM) or E10.

Bahlil said the nickname minister of ethanol arose because of two things.
First
, there is a lack of education regarding E10 to the public.
Second,
The E10 polemic is used by importers for certain interests.
“The first is my brothers, perhaps the explanation (public education) that we have not (received) in full. The second is the importer. Just write it big, that’s okay,” said Bahlil.
“Yes, importers, this product is already comfortable. They said, ‘What does Bahlil want? Diesel is no longer allowed to be imported, aviation fuel is not allowed to be imported, even if it is a sneeze, imports are reduced’. It’s up to you. You really want to regulate this country,” he added.
Then, Bahlil also said that many parties attacked him on social media regarding the discourse on implementing ethanol. However, he emphasized that he was not affected by this pressure.
“Early on, they beat me up on social media about what is called ethanol, I really died. They really messed up about ethanol,” he said.
Then, he also said that President Prabowo Subianto asked that state money not continue to flow abroad so that there was talk of implementing E10.
“This is what President Prabowo meant. Don’t let our money leak out. Moreover, we have benefits in this country,” explained Bahlil.
He explained that mandatory ethanol has been implemented in various countries, namely Brazil has implemented E30, the United States has implemented E20, while Asian countries, such as India, Thailand and China have also implemented E10 and E20.
“This ethanol, the raw material is from cassava, from sugar cane, from corn. This ethanol is a process of vegetable material that can be an import substitute for gasoline,” explained Bahlil.
It is known that the government will implement mandatory E10 for all domestic gasoline or fuel oil (BBM) products.
E10 is a mixture of gasoline and 10 percent ethanol. However, this obligation is excluded for diesel because there is a separate program for this type of fuel, namely Bioethanol (B50) next year.
Bahlil said that the mandatory E10 had been discussed with President Prabowo Subianto and it had been agreed to implement it.
“In the future, we will push for E10. Last night we had a meeting with the President. The President has agreed to plan a mandatory 10 percent ethanol,” said Bahlil at the Indonesia Langgas Berenergi event initiated by Detik and hitclubapk3 Indonesia, at Anjungan Sarinah, Central Jakarta, last Tuesday (7/10).
Bahlil explained that the mandatory 10 percent ethanol was aimed at reducing domestic oil imports by utilizing abundant natural resources, such as sugar cane plants.
