Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM)
Bahlil
Lahadalia opened her voice about the nickname Minister of Ethanol that netizens created for her because of the implementation discourse
ethanol
10 percent on fuel oil (
BBM
) or E10.
Bahlil suspects that the nickname minister of ethanol arose due to two factors.
First
, there is a lack of education regarding E10 to the public.
Second
, the E10 polemic is exploited by importers for certain interests.
“The first is my brothers, perhaps the explanation (public education) that we have not (received) in full. The second is the importer. Just write it big, it’s okay,” said Bahlil at the 2025 Bisnis Indonesia Group Conference at the Raffles Hotel, South Jakarta, Monday (8/12).

“Yes, importer, this product is comfortable. They said, ‘
What does Bahlil want?
?
Diesel fuel is no longer allowed to be imported, aviation fuel is not allowed to be imported, this is a sneeze to reduce imports
‘.It’s up to you.”You really want to rule this country,” added Bahlil.
He emphasized that President Prabowo Subianto asked that state money not continue to flow abroad until discourse emerged about implementing E10.
“This is what Mr. President Prabowo meant. Don’t let our money leak out. Moreover, we have benefits in this country, you know. Everywhere I am also told that I am Mister Minister of Ethanol. Epen kah (Papuan language: it’s really important),” said Bahlil.
Bahlil then confided in the many people who attacked him about ethanol on social media.Even so, he emphasized that he was not affected by this pressure.
“Early on, they beat me up on social media about what is called ethanol, it really killed me. They really messed up about ethanol,” he said.
He explained that mandatory ethanol has been implemented in various countries, namely Brazil has implemented E30, the United States has implemented E20, while Asian countries, such as India, Thailand and China have also implemented E10 and E20.
“This ethanol, the raw material is from cassava, from sugar cane, from corn. This ethanol is a process of vegetable material that can be an import substitute for gasoline,” explained Bahlil.
The government will implement mandatory 10 percent ethanol (E10) for all domestic gasoline or fuel oil (BBM) products.
E10 is a mixture of gasoline and 10 percent ethanol. However, this obligation is excluded for diesel because there is a separate program for this type of fuel, namely Bioethanol (B50) next year.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said that the mandatory E10 had been discussed with President Prabowo Subianto and it had been agreed to implement it.
“In the future we will push for E10. Last night we had a meeting with the President. The President has agreed to plan a mandatory 10 percent ethanol,” said Bahlil at the Indonesia Langgas Berenergi event initiated by Detik and hitclubapk3 Indonesia, at Anjungan Sarinah, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (7/10).
Bahlil said the aim of the mandatory 10 percent ethanol was to reduce domestic oil imports by utilizing abundant natural resources. One of them is from sugar cane plants to make ethanol.
Because, based on portions, 60 percent of fuel used for consumption currently still comes from imports. Therefore, for domestic energy independence, the government must use the resources it has.
Apart from reducing imports, added Bahlil, mandatory E10 also aims to support the commitment to environmentally friendly clean energy or Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060.
“In this way, we will mix our gasoline with ethanol. The aim is, so that we don’t import a lot and also to make clean, environmentally friendly oil,” he explained.
Regarding the 10 percent ethanol obligation, Bahlil estimates that its implementation could take effect in the next 2-3 years or in 2027 or 2028.
“Yes, 2-3 years from now on. So we have to calculate carefully first,” he said.
