In a court in Dhaka, they sentenced Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death in absentia.
They were found guilty of human crimes regarding the deadly incident during last year’s student-led uprising.
The former minister’s whereabouts are unknown, but Bangladesh said he was also in India.
Bangladesh also asserted “granting asylum to the two convicts would be highly hostile and an abuse of justice.”
India’s foreign ministry said it “recorded the verdict” against Hasina.
“India remains committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, inclusion and stability,” he said in a statement that did not address the issue of extradition.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus welcomed the decision.
“The death penalty sentence to Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in the case of human crimes is a historic verdict,” he said as a Nobel Peace Prize winner.
He called for calm and warned against any attempt to violate public order, and appealed to everyone to refrain from any acts of indiscipline.
Hasina’s 15-year term in office was marked by human rights violations, including mass detentions and murders of political opponents.
Bangladesh last year also said it would request an Interpol red notice for Hasina, but there is no record of it on the international police agency’s warning list.
