“Our monitoring shows that fraudsters increase their tactics around big releases such as the latest season of a popular TV series, combining familiar bait with other tricks,” said Olga Altukhova, Security Expert at Kaspersky in a statement, Friday (12/12).
“These ‘streaming’ sites often look identical to trusted platforms, but their goal remains the same – to exploit your enthusiasm for an event for profit,” he continued.
Scammers offer downloads of new episodes or pretend they can provide free streaming access, tricking users into visiting websites that can collect personal information, financial details and login credentials. This can result in identity theft and unauthorized charges.
Kaspersky says these scams usually start with attractive offers for free or early access to the series.
Victims who click on the link may be immediately redirected to a malicious page or asked to sign up for a free account that requires sensitive details such as full name, date of birth, phone number and banking card information.
Users end up not getting any content and are instead charged unknown fees.
Fraudsters have also introduced a special tactic that requires users to verify that you are a human before granting access to the broadcast.
This step often imitates a legitimate CAPTCHA challenge but is actually a mechanism
phishing.
Such fake verification requests may ask users to enter their login and password from another account, such as an email account or request the creation of a new account and enter their banking card data to activate a free trial.
This step is claimed to be necessary to prevent bots.Once the credentials are entered, the attacker immediately captures them, allowing unauthorized access to the victim’s account or financial accounts.
“We strongly recommend sticking to official sources and carefully checking any unexpected requests because your security is more important than free entertainment,” said Altukhova.
Furthermore, Kaspersky provides several tips to avoid this kind of fraud. Here are the tips:
– Pay attention to the film’s official release date in theaters, streaming services, TV, DVD, or other sources.
– Check the authenticity of the website before entering personal data and only use official web pages to watch or download movies.Double-check the URL format and spelling of the company name.
– Use a reliable security solution that identifies malicious attachments and blocks phishing sites.
– Avoid links that promise early content delivery, and if you have any doubts about
content authenticity, check with your entertainment provider.
