Mount Sakurajima in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwest Japan, erupted in the early hours of Sunday (16/11).The eruption spewed smoke and ash as high as about 4,400 meters into the air.
The Japan Meteorological Agency stated that the eruption occurred in the Minamidake Crater at around 00.57 local time and was followed by several further eruptions.
Today’s eruption of Mount Sakurajima occurred after previously erupting on October 18, 2024.
This eruption caused large volcanic rocks to be ejected up to the fifth station, but no pyroclastic flows were detected. The warning level is at level three on a scale of five, meaning access to the mountain is restricted.
Sakurajima is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes, connected to the Osumi Peninsula on Kyushu, the main island of southwestern Japan. This mountain was once an island, but a lava flow in 1914 created a land route to the peninsula.
On 13 September 2016, a team of experts from the University of Bristol and the Sakurajima Volcano Research Center in Japan estimated that the volcano could have a major eruption within 30 years;since then, two eruptions have occurred.
