the most dangerous. This infection can develop very quickly and in certain cases cause death within just 24 hours of someone being infected.
Even more worrying, this disease can attack anyone.Starting from babies, children, teenagers, adults, to the elderly.
Specialist in Internal Medicine, Consultant Allergy Immunology, Suzy Maria, explained that the cause of meningococcus is the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis.Even though it is deadly, this bacteria can live quietly in the human body without causing any symptoms.

“Make no mistake, it is teenagers and young adults who are the carriers. It is these healthy young people who are the transmitters,” said Suzy at a health discussion with Kalventis in Jakarta, Thursday (5/12) citing Antara.
According to him, carriers of this bacteria can transmit it through respiratory droplets when coughing or sneezing. In developed countries, meningococcal cases are often found in students or military members who often gather in closed spaces.
Bacteria can ‘live’ for months
Meningococcus bacteria can live as commensals in the nasopharynx area, the back of the nose and throat. From there, bacteria can enter the bloodstream, especially when the immune system decreases or changes occur in the mucous membranes.
If it manages to enter the bloodstream, bacteria can spread to various organs of the body. This condition then triggers serious illnesses such as:
• Meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain)
• Pneumonia
• Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD)
“The general symptoms are high fever, headache and stiff neck. But you have to be careful because this bacteria can survive for months in the nasopharynx and often has no symptoms,” explained Suzy.
Babies and the elderly are the most vulnerable groups because their immune systems are still developing or have begun to weaken.
Prevention
According to Suzy, vaccination is the safest way to avoid the bacteria that cause this disease. The conjugate meningitis vaccine is the best choice because it is able to form memory cells and provide long-term protection.
“The latest generation conjugate meningitis vaccine can reduce the risk of carriers and protect in the long term,” he said.
Director of PT Kalventis Sinergi Farma Vidi Agiorno Metupawan also added that the latest technology in the vaccine could help suppress transmission in the community.
“But of course, apart from vaccines, people are also advised to maintain a healthy lifestyle, regulate their diet and ensure their stamina remains optimal,” he said.
Meningococcus can grow very quickly, anyone who experiences symptoms such as sudden high fever, severe headaches and stiff neck needs to get medical treatment immediately.
Although it rarely occurs, its severity and speed make vigilance very important.Vaccination, healthy living habits, and understanding how transmission occurs can help reduce the risk of infection for yourself and your family.
