Jair Bolsonaro is back in the spotlight after admitting that he broke the electronic monitoring bracelet he had been wearing since August. This confession was made after Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered preventive detention against him on Saturday (22/11) because he was considered a flight risk.
In a video released by Brazilian authorities, Bolsonaro casually admitted his actions.
“I put a hot iron on it,” he told Federal Police agents, saying he did it just because he was “curious.”

According to Expresso, a report from the State Secretariat for Prison Administration (SEAPE) stated that there were “clear and significant signs of damage” to the bracelet.Authorities confirmed that the former head of state had indeed “attempted to open the monitoring device”.
The Monitoring Integration Center (CIME) detected interference with the device at 00.07.A team of bodyguards on guard near Bolsonaro’s residence was immediately deployed.
Bolsonaro admitted that he started burning the bracelet in the afternoon, although initially his team claimed that the device had only “hit the stairs”.However, a CIME inspection found scorch marks around the bracelet structure, especially on the locking part.
Suspected escape attempt
Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes considered the act of destroying the monitoring bracelet as an indication of an attempt to escape. He said the attempt to tamper with the device could “facilitate an escape plan, reinforced by the chaos of the prayer rally” that Bolsonaro’s son, Flávio Bolsonaro, held the same day in front of the former president’s house.
Bolsonaro’s preventive detention was imposed as a precautionary measure to maintain public order.Bolsonaro is currently also facing legal proceedings related to the coup attempt on January 8 2023.
Bolsonaro’s lawyers said the Supreme Court decision was “confusing” and baseless. They considered the basis for the detention, namely the act of prayer which was called a diversion of attention, to be unreasonable.
“The 1988 Constitution guarantees the right of assembly for everyone, especially freedom of religion,” Bolsonaro’s legal team was quoted as saying in a statement

.
They also questioned the argument that Bolsonaro would flee, given that he is “under house arrest, wearing a monitoring bracelet, and under the supervision of the authorities”.
However, lawyer Paulo Cunha Bueno was reluctant to comment on Bolsonaro’s confession regarding the attempt to damage the bracelet. He only considered the bracelet issue as “a narrative to justify things that cannot be justified”.

Bolsonaro is the fourth Brazilian president to be detained since the country returned to democracy.Previously, President Lula, Michel Temer, and Fernando Collor de Melo also spent time in detention.
Bolsonaro has served three months of house arrest in a two-story residence complete with a swimming pool and garden in Brasilia. The house was paid for using Liberal Party funds, with rent costing more than 1,900 euros or around Rp. 36 million per month, according to a report by Veja magazine.
On September 11, Brazil’s Supreme Court sentenced Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison. He was found guilty of various charges, including attempted violence to undermine the democratic order, attempted coup, involvement in an armed criminal organization, and destruction of public facilities.
