BPBD Bima Urges Residents to Immediately Vacate Sangeang Island, What Dangers Are There?

“We have coordinated with the sub-district government and village heads in coastal areas to socialize this appeal. Residents who are still on Sangeang Island are asked to leave the island immediately,” said Head of Emergency and Logistics Division of BPBD Bima Nurul Huda, Saturday (22/11) as quoted by Antara.
On November 22 2025, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) raised the status of Mount Sangeang Api from level I or normal to level II or alert.

PVMBG noted that earthquake intensity had increased significantly since early November.There were 43 earthquake gusts recorded on November 18 2025.
Apart from that, five tornado earthquakes, 25 deep volcanic earthquakes, six shallow volcanic earthquakes, 31 local tectonic earthquakes and 56 distant tectonic earthquakes were recorded.
Mount Sangeang Api, which forms Sangeang Island, is currently inhabited by around 100 people who work as farmers and livestock breeders.
PVMBG recommends that the public, visitors and tourists do not carry out activities within a danger radius of three kilometers from the main crater, and avoid the southeast sector up to the coastline as far as 6.5 kilometers.
BPBD Bima is improving monitoring coordination, disseminating information on prohibitions on approaching the danger radius, as well as collecting basic logistics data if volcanic activity conditions worsen.
The Head of Wera Subdistrict, Ilham, whose area is directly opposite Mount Sangengan Api, said that residents’ activities are still running normally and there have been no reports of direct impacts from increased volcanic activity.
“People are still carrying out their activities as usual. So far there has been no impact,” concluded Ilham.
