Fraser helmed the reboot of The Mummy (1999) which also starred Weisz and was a box office hit.The blockbuster film tells the story of a treasure hunter who accidentally resurrects an Egyptian priest who was cursed with supernatural powers.
He returned for two sequels, The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).
Universal tried to revive “The Mummy” starring Tom Cruise in 2017, but in vain. The film was a commercial failure and failed to kickstart the studio’s so-called Dark Universe.
Fraser is now enjoying a major career comeback with The Whale (2022) after leaving Hollywood due to personal problems, health issues and assault allegations he leveled against the former president of the HFPA.
The Whale earned Fraser an Oscar for best actor. While promoting The Whale, he said he was open to reprising his most popular role, adventurer Rick O’Connell, in another Mummy sequel.
“I don’t know how it will turn out,” he said at the time.”But I would be open to it, if someone came up with the right concept.”
