The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner released autopsy results Friday and stated Neves Valente “died from a gunshot wound to the head, and the manner of death was suicide.”
Medical examiners estimated he died on December 16, three days after carrying out the action that killed two students, namely Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, as well as a renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor, Nuno Loureiro.
Federal officials also released preliminary results of ballistics and DNA testing the same day.
“Two 9 mm caliber handguns were found with his body in New Hampshire,” said a joint statement by the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
One of the two firearms “was shown to be positively correlated with the weapon used in the mass shooting at Brown University.”Other weapons “were shown to be positively correlated with the murder” of Loureiro, according to the statement.
The FBI-ATF statement also said rapid DNA testing “preliminarily matched Neves Valente to DNA found in evidence at Brown University,” without mentioning testing at the MIT professor’s home.
However, the statement did not explain whether one of the weapons recovered was used by Valente to commit suicide, one of the many questions that remain unanswered regarding this series of events.
So far, authorities have not revealed the motive for the shooting. It was also stated that Valente did not know the student victims.
Portuguese media Expresso reported that Valente, who comes from Torres Novas in central Portugal, had studied at the Institut Superior Técnico (IST) in Lisbon during the same period as Loureiro.
The two were classmates, and Valente was named the best student that year.
“Most classmates barely remember the student named Claudio Valente, apart from the fact that he was the best in his class that year,” IST President Rogério Colaço told the outlet.
In contrast, Loureiro, who teaches nuclear science, engineering and physics, maintains ties with IST professors.
Investigators had difficulty finding solid clues in the days after the incident.President Donald Trump even criticized Brown University for failing to connect campus security cameras to the police system.
During the long hunt for the perpetrator, dozens of names circulated on social media and other platforms regarding the shooting and almost all of them were incorrect and unrelated to the crime.
Rhode Island officials condemned the spread of misinformation, which they said was complicating the investigation.
