“In today’s world, how many wounds are borne by people who have no voice because their cries are muffled and drowned out by the indifferent attitude of those in power,” said Suharyo, imitating the Pope’s message, Thursday (25/12).
Suharyo also reminded people not to use material things as the sole measure of happiness.According to him, excessive dependence on money can damage human dignity and trigger violence.
He warned that wealth accumulated through unjust means would not bring peace.
“Violence inflicted on others in order to accumulate blood-stained wealth will not be able to keep anyone in power and escape death,” he stressed.
Corruption as a “Grave Sin”
The most crucial part of the Christmas message is the condemnation of corrupt practices.Cardinal Suharyo quoted Pope Francis’ strong statement calling corruption a festering wound and a very serious public scandal.
Regarding the message regarding corruption, Suharyo said that corruption is called a sin that “shouts loudly to heaven” to demand justice because it destroys the order of personal and social life.
Apart from that, corrupt practices are considered to close the door to the future because this greed directly tramples on the rights of the poor and the weak.
Suharyo also emphasized that corruption makes people lose the ability to see the future with optimism and hope.
“Corruption is a serious public scandal because it destroys the hopes of the weak and tramples on the poorest among the poor,” concluded Suharyo.
