Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (
BMKG
) reveals the cause of the hail phenomenon in East Kotawaringin (Kotim), Central Kalimantan.
Through the Haji Asan Sampit Meteorological Station, the BMKG said this phenomenon was triggered by cumulonimbus clouds containing ice grains, usually when they fall in the Kotim area with fairly hot temperatures, the ice has melted or is in the form of water when it reaches the ground.
Residents don’t need to worry about this phenomenon, which is rare in the Kotim area, but is still local and relatively safe, so people don’t need to panic.

The hail phenomenon hit Cempaka Mulia Timur Village, Cempaga District on Friday (10/10) afternoon.
BMKG Kotim forecaster Rizaldo Raditya Pratama explained that the phenomenon of hail in the Kotim area is indeed rare, but it can still be explained scientifically. This phenomenon is actually quite common, but it is very rare in Kotim because of its geographical conditions.
“But because yesterday there may have been atmospheric instability so the surrounding environment was cold so that the form of ice that fell remained in the form of ice. Usually this happens in cold areas, but this is also a rare but quite local phenomenon,” he explained as quoted from
Between
.
He continued, the hail phenomenon was only observed to occur in one location with a duration of approximately one hour.
Based on BMKG radar and satellite monitoring, cumulonimbus clouds were in the area for about an hour, namely from 15:00 WIB to 16:00 WIB.
He also responded to public concerns about the potential for dangerous substances in the hail.
It was explained that if a cumulonimbus cloud near a factory, the core of which forms the cloud, could be contaminated with pollutant substances, it could indeed be possible for the cloud to contain dangerous substances.
“However, this condition is also very rare in the Kotim area, so generally it is safe,” he explained.
Even so, Rizaldo appealed to the public to remain alert when there are cumulonimbus clouds or, for example, there is the potential for rain accompanied by strong winds.
Furthermore, for the weather forecast for the next few days, he said the potential for light to moderate rain remains, but weather conditions will still be dominated by sunny, cloudy and cloudy conditions.
“Regarding whether this hail phenomenon will occur again, the potential is actually small because it very rarely happens in Kotim, unless the atmosphere is very unstable,” said Rizaldo.
