The Republic of Indonesia, which was discussing the harmonization of the Copyright Bill (RUU), was suddenly filled with throwback moments to the country’s music world.
The chairman of the DPR RI Baleg, Bob Hasan, bluntly touched on the long feud between two big names, Ahmad Dhani and Once Mekel, in the middle of the meeting session.
The meeting, which was held at the DPR Building, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (11/11) invited representatives of the All Indonesian Composers Association (AKSI), Vibrasi Suara Indonesia (VISI), and the Indonesian Recording Industry Association (ASIRI).

The originally serious atmosphere of the meeting immediately melted when Bob Hasan gave an example which was greeted with laughter by all the participants, including Once Mekel who was present as a representative.”Ahmad Dhani has had enough with Once,” said Bob Hasan.
Bob Hasan explained that the disputes between music actors that have been rife lately, according to him, are not caused by the bad intentions of the musicians, but because of a clear legal vacuum.
He believes that songwriters and singers should remain friends, considering that both are important and inseparable parts in producing a great work.
“Don’t look apples to apples, head to head between… in the end we separate ourselves as to which is the creator, which is the singer. In fact what causes the dispute is due to a legal vacuum, not due to the will of the creator, not the will of the singer,” explained Bob Hasan.
According to him, the absence of clear legal protection makes friction between musicians difficult to avoid. The biggest impact is a loss for the public and Indonesian music lovers.
Bob Hasan then gave an example of the harmonious relationship between Fadly (Padi) and Piyu as a spirit that should be emulated by all industry players. He hopes that this spirit of friendship will spread, including to Ahmad Dhani and Once.
“The Indonesian people are at a loss, we don’t hear Sting’s voice anymore in Dewa’s songs, right? There are characteristics of Sting in Dewa, we can’t find them. Peace will return, unite again so that we enjoy this, right, we just have to wait for the UU,” he added, jokingly quipping about Dewa 19’s musical style in the past.
However, the DPR RI Baleg emphasized that their main focus remains on improving copyright regulations, not on musicians’ personal problems.
“So we see that this is not a personal problem, Mas Ariel, not Mas Piyu, no. This is a problem where there is a legal vacuum, which has finally come to the center of personal matters,” concluded Bob Hasan.
He believes that with a clearer Copyright Bill, all parties, including creators, singers and producers, can work in harmony without having to worry about getting into repeated legal problems.
