“These coupons are limited in quantity and will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis,” said a statement from the Ningbo Civil Affairs Department, as quoted by Reuters.
These coupons can be used for wedding photos, ceremonies and celebrations, hotel accommodations, and other wedding-related purposes.
Similar policies have also been implemented in eastern cities such as Hangzhou and Pinghu, where cash vouchers will be available until the end of the year.
In recent years the number of marriages in China has continued to decline due to the high costs of childcare and education. For the Chinese government, increasing people’s interest in getting married and having children is an important issue.
China has a population of 1.4 billion people as the second largest in the world and is experiencing a rapid population aging process.
The Chinese government’s efforts last year to address the issue encouraged campuses to provide “love education” in a positive view of marriage, relationships and family.
Beijing also called on local governments to allocate resources in the face of the population crisis and reward marriage and having children “at the right age.”A total of 6.1 million couples registered as married last year, down from 7.68 million the previous year.
