“A country like this is not in a position to shoulder the responsibility of maintaining international peace and security, and is not worthy of being a permanent member of the Security Council,” Mao Ning said.
Mao Ning then quoted the UN Charter which states that the Security Council bears the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.
However, Japan has a history of carrying out aggression during World War II, which caused deep suffering for the people of Asia and the world.
“Until now, Japan has not fully repented for its war crimes,” said the spokesman.
Several parties in Japan, he continued, continue to normalize wrong perceptions about the history of World War II.A number of officials, including Takaichi, still pay homage to Yasukuni Shrine, distorting, denying, and even whitewashing the history of Japanese aggression.
Yasukuni Shrine is a shrine to honor Japanese citizens who died in World War II.
However, the place became a source of political controversy after 14 people referred to as Class A War Criminals from WWII were immortalized there in 1978.
Furthermore, Mao Ning said that Takaichi’s false statements regarding Taiwan seriously disturbed China’s internal affairs, trampled on international law and international relations norms, and challenged the post-World War II international order.
A similar call was previously made by China’s representative at the UN, Fu Chong, at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly discussing Security Council reform.
“Japan is completely unqualified to run for permanent membership in the Security Council,” Fu Chong said.
Currently, there are five permanent members of the UN Security Council, namely China, Russia, France, the United Kingdom and the United States. For years, there have been proposals to reform this body to add permanent members.
The China-Japan dispute arose after Takaichi said an armed attack on Taiwan could be the basis for Japan to deploy troops as part of the concept of collective defense.
China’s Foreign Ministry then urged Takaichi to withdraw his statement.Chinese Consul General in Osaka Xue Jian was furious and uploaded a threatening statement to the Japanese PM on social media.
Takaichi was reluctant to withdraw that statement.Relations between the two countries are increasingly heating up.China even banned flights to Japan and banned citizens from watching anime.
