It has heated up recently after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made statements that were considered provocative regarding Taiwan.
In early November before parliament, Takaichi said an armed attack on Taiwan could be the basis for Japan to deploy troops as part of the concept of collective defense.
China’s Foreign Ministry then urged Takaichi to withdraw his statement.Chinese Consul General in Osaka Xue Jian was furious and uploaded a threatening statement to the Japanese PM on social media.

Takaichi was reluctant to withdraw that statement.Relations between the two countries are increasingly heating up.China even banned flights to Japan and banned citizens from watching anime.
Chinese tourists make up the largest number of visitors to Japan. If tensions escalate, what will happen next?
China has repeatedly insisted that Takaichi retract statements deemed provocative, eroding the foundations of relations between the two countries, triggering public anger.
“If Japan refuses to revoke it or even continues down the wrong path, China must take firm and harsh countermeasures, and all the resulting consequences will be borne by Japan,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning during a press conference on Wednesday (19/11).
However, Mao Ning did not explain in more detail what firm action would be taken.

, the risk of increased conflict can also occur.Experts assess that there is increased activity in disputed areas such as the Senkaku Islands and Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).This increases the risk that hostility could escalate.
In the short term, this dispute is likely to have an impact on bilateral economic relations and people-to-people relations between China and Japan.
China’s warning to avoid travel to Japan caused Japanese retail and tourism shares to plunge.
As of May 2024, there are more than 120,000 Chinese students in Japan.Apart from that, more than 1.67 million residents of the Bamboo Curtain Country visited Sakura Country in the first eight months of this year.
Executive economist at Nomura Research Institute, Takahide Kiuchi, estimates that China’s latest travel warning could trigger economic losses of ¥2.2 trillion or around IDR 234 trillion for Japan.
The economy was increasingly affected after China postponed the release of two Japanese anime citing “audience sentiment” to the Takaichi government.
China’s series of actions did not deter Takaichi. He is still steadfast in his stance. However, sources said a high-level Tokyo-based government envoy was on his way to Beijing to calm the situation.
Japan-Taiwan Relations
Taiwan was under Japanese colonial rule for around 50 years in 1895. The colonial period only ended after Japan lost World War II in 1945.
Japan then handed over Taiwan to China, which at that time was still called the Republic of China (ROC).At that time, the ROC was involved in a civil war with Communist forces.
The ROC then lost and withdrew to Taiwan. They established a government there, while the Communists established a government in Beijing and called themselves the People’s Republic of China/PRC.
The PRC claims Taiwan as part of its sovereignty to this day. They also repeatedly emphasized that they would do everything necessary by force to defend the island.
Taiwan is often a source of dispute between China and the United States. If, the Beijing-based government actually invades Taiwan, this will drag in countries like Japan.
For Japan the attack could disrupt their supply chain. As much as 99 percent of this country’s trade depends on maritime routes.
