In the picture shown by Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense, China’s large aircraft carrier can be seen sailing in the waters. The Ministry of Defense did not say where the photo was taken and did not provide other details.China’s Defense Ministry meanwhile did not provide comment.
Speaking to parliament, Taiwanese Defense Minister Wellington Koo said the Fujian ship was likely headed for Changxing Island in Shanghai, which is home to China’s main naval shipyard.
He admitted that he had not seen any military activity from the ship without the aircraft.
In a separate statement on Wednesday, Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense reported that China had since morning carried out a “joint combat readiness patrol” near Taiwan involving 23 warplanes and warships.
These fighter planes include J-10 jets as well as H-6K bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
Almost every day Taiwan reports Chinese military activity around them.Taipei views these activities as part of Beijing’s ongoing pressure on the Taiwanese government.
China has always considered Taiwan as part of its territory.Meanwhile, Taiwan wants independence and already has its own government.
China’s claim also includes the Taiwan Strait, which China claims is its sovereignty.Taiwan and the United States meanwhile view the strait as an international waterway.
In September, the Fujian aircraft carrier was also reported to have passed through the Taiwan Strait and entered the South China Sea to conduct trials.
Fujian is China’s third aircraft carrier, with a flat flight deck and electromagnetic catapults for launching aircraft. These details make the Fujian a potentially much more capable naval weapon than China’s first two Russian-designed aircraft carriers.
The Fujian carrier is believed to be capable of carrying far more fighter jets and is more heavily armed than the Liaoning and Shandong carriers.
Fujian is also expected to be able to accommodate more and more diverse aircraft than the other two aircraft carriers.
