, Fujian, officially became operational this week, at a time when Beijing has ambitions to rival its naval power

China’s Xinhua news agency reported on Friday (7/11) that President Xi Jinping had led a ceremony in Hainan on Wednesday (5/11) to inaugurate Fujian operations.

Fujian is China’s third aircraft carrier equipped with an electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS).The only other aircraft carrier equipped with this technology is the US USS Gerald R Ford.
EMALS allows aircraft to take off carrying heavier weapons and fuel, so they can attack targets at greater distances.
Fujian represents China’s most ambitious maritime supremacy attempt.This ship was inaugurated in 2022 and has gone through a series of trials in recent months.

In fact, China’s aircraft carriers still lag behind those of the United States, both in terms of numbers and sophistication.China only has three aircraft carriers, while the US already has 11 aircraft carriers.
All of Beijing’s aircraft carriers are still diesel powered.While Washington is all nuclear powered.
However, Fujian is the closest to a US aircraft carrier in terms of size and capabilities.
Fujian now joins two Chinese aircraft carriers actively operating at sea, namely Liaoning and Shandong.

Fujian has been in the hot spotlight ahead of its inauguration.Chinese defense officials confirmed in September that the most advanced aircraft carrier had sailed through the Taiwan Strait to carry out trials and training missions in the South China Sea.
