The Culex quinquefasciatus species that lives in tropical and subtropical countries is found in
South Korea
, Jeju Island to be precise, for the first time in history.
On Monday (3/11), the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) stated that mosquito samples collected in August on Jeju Island included this type of mosquito.

“It is not yet clear how the mosquito got here, but South Korea is now an environment that can be inhabited by tropical and subtropical mosquitoes. We will check whether this species has also spread to other areas outside Jeju Island in the next season,” said a KDCA official, quoted as saying
The Straits Times
, on Tuesday (4/11).
KDCA said this species of mosquito belongs to the C. pipiens species complex, a common house mosquito found in South Korea and various regions in Asia as well as Europe and Africa. However, these mosquitoes generally live in warmer areas than South Korea.
Although research in 1956 recorded this species living in South Korea, this is the first time its existence has been truly confirmed.
KDCA also stated that the mosquito was found in several areas on Jeju Island, indicating that this species had succeeded in establishing a habitat in Ginseng Country.
As part of the monitoring process carried out by the South Korean Government, mosquito samples will also be collected to follow up if there is potential for transmission of infectious diseases.
This phenomenon is not the first, recently mosquitoes were also discovered for the first time in Iceland.
Three mosquito specimens were found in Kjos, a rural valley area near Hvalfjordur.
Typically, mosquitoes are only found on planes landing in Iceland from other countries.
The mosquito species found in Iceland was identified as Culiseta annulata. This is a type of cold-resistant mosquito that is common in northern Europe.
Scientists have long predicted that mosquitoes will eventually breed in Iceland, a Nordic country with an average temperature of 1.8 degrees Celsius.
This is in line with climate change, which is expanding the range of cold-blooded animals to areas with much colder temperatures.
Mosquitoes are cold-blooded animals that prefer to live in warm or tropical areas.Generally, they live in areas with temperatures above 28 degrees Celsius.
