The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a significant increase in cold calls in the last week, which indicates the flow of cold air from the Asian continent towards Indonesian territory.

A cold surge is a kind of cold air mass flow from Asia, specifically the Siberian plains.This air is typically dry because it carries cold air masses that prevent evaporation.
“This condition triggers moderate to heavy rain in the western and southern regions of Indonesia along with the strengthening of the Asian Monsoon winds,” said BMKG in its Weekly Weather Prospects for the Period 23-29 December 2025, reported on Tuesday (23/12).
BMKG predicts that atmospheric phenomena on a global, regional and local scale will play a significant role in influencing the weather for the next week.
On a global-regional scale, a pressure difference of more than 10 hPa was recorded between Gushi and Hong Kong on December 21 2025, indicating the propagation of a cold front from Asia towards Indonesia.This condition is predicted to continue to occur, especially during the Christmas 2025 period.
Then, warm sea surface temperatures can also increase the potential for evaporation in a number of areas, such as the west coast of Aceh to Lampung, the Malacca Strait, the southern waters of the Natuna Islands, the western waters of West Kalimantan, the northern waters of west-central Java, and the Pacific Ocean north of Papua.
BMKG also revealed that the weak La Nina phenomenon has contributed to increasing the potential for rain in eastern Indonesia.Furthermore, the combination of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and atmospheric waves is predicted to be active in the Indian Ocean west of Aceh, the Indian Ocean west of the Nias Islands, the northern Malacca Strait, which will contribute to increased growth of rain clouds in the region.
The role of cyclone seeds
Apart from the cold front and other atmospheric phenomena, Tropical Cyclone Seed 93S in the Indian Ocean southwest of West Java is also predicted to have an indirect impact on a number of areas.
The seed of Tropical Cyclone 93S, with pressure at the center of 985 hPa, and maximum speed near the center of 55 knots, is estimated to be in the Indian Ocean southwest of Banten with a westward movement direction.
According to BMKG, this tropical cyclone seed has the potential to become a tropical cyclone in the high category in the next 48 hours.
“This tropical cyclone seed forms an area of slowing wind speed (convergence) and wind meeting (confluence) in the West Coast Region of Lampung to the south of West Java which can increase the potential for rain cloud growth around the tropical cyclone seed,” said BMKG.
