Two people were reported killed in
accident
on the Bromo Tengger Semeru tourist route, precisely at the Wedi Ireng climb, Ngadas Village, Poncokusumo District, Malang Regency, Monday (15/12) afternoon.
Kasatlantas Malang Police AKP Muhammad Alif Chelvin Arliska said the accident involved a black Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) driven by ED (54), a resident from Bandung.
Initially, the car carrying the group of five tourists drove from the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park area towards Malang Regency.However, when crossing the downhill route on the Wedi Ireng incline, the vehicle allegedly experienced braking problems.

Kasatlantas Malang Police AKP Muhammad Alif Chelvin Arliska said, based on the results of the crime scene investigation and witness statements, the vehicle experienced brake failure when passing on a steep route.
“Arriving at the Wedi Ireng incline, the vehicle allegedly experienced brake failure on the downhill road. The driver then swerved to the right, but the vehicle actually sagged and fell down the track,” said Chelvin, Tuesday (16/12).
As a result of the accident, one female passenger, ASI (70), a resident of Jalan Ikan Tengiri, Malang City, was declared dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, another victim, ASA (70), who was ASI’s sibling, was rushed to hospital, but ultimately died while undergoing treatment.
“The two victims who died were vehicle passengers. One died on the spot and the other died while being treated at the hospital. The driver and other passengers suffered injuries and are currently still undergoing medical treatment,” he said.
The injured victim was referred to Sumber Sentosa Tumpang Hospital, while the handling of the vehicle and evidence was carried out by Malang Police Traffic Unit officers.
Chelvin added that his party had carried out a number of handling steps, starting from crime scene processing, examining witnesses, to in-depth research into the factors that caused the accident.
“We have carried out a crime scene investigation, secured evidence, requested a post-mortem for the victim, and carried out further investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident,” he said.
He also appealed to motorists crossing the Bromo tourist route to be more careful, especially on steep ascents and descents, especially during rainy conditions.
“We remind drivers to ensure the vehicle is in prime condition, especially the braking system, and to always be careful when crossing mountain paths,” concluded Chelvin.
