British Deputy Ambassador to Indonesia Matthew Downing conveyed the repatriation of two of his fellow citizens

, Lindsay June Sandiford (68) and Shahab Shahabadi (35), due to serious health problems.
He also thanked President Prabowo Subianto, the relevant ministries, the Attorney General’s Office, the police and other institutions involved in this process.
“The British Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, has personally thanked President Prabowo Subianto for the support and magnanimity shown by the President and his government, especially the Coordinating Minister Mr Yusril Ihza Mahendra, which is proof of the close relationship between the UK and Indonesia and our people,” he said during a press conference at the Kerobokan Class IIA Prison, in Badung Regency, Bali, on Thursday (6/11) evening.

He said that as previously explained by Yusril, after signing the agreement with the British Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yvette Cooper, this was the final result of a collaboration process lasting several months between the UK and Indonesia.
“The two detainees, Lindsay Sandiford and Shahab Shahabadi, have serious health problems and will be repatriated to the UK on humanitarian grounds.
“Our agreement is built on the principles of mutual respect, sovereignty and international cooperation,” he said.
“This process also reflects the spirit of our long-standing partnership with Indonesia, including justice, human rights and the rule of law,” he said.
The Indonesian government has officially repatriated Lindsay and Shahab, convicts on death row and life imprisonment, to England, after both parties signed a handover report.
Both were presented at the press conference, they wore white shirts.Lindsay was seen covering her face with both hands and wearing a white mask during the press conference, while Shahab sat wearing a blue mask.
After signing the handover minutes, the two of them left Kerobokan Prison.Lindsay was seen leaving in a wheelchair and being carried by prison officers.
The signing of the handover minutes was carried out by the Deputy for Immigration and Corrections at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Rights, Immipas I Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram, Head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections for Bali Province Decky Nurmansyah, Head of the Denpasar District Prosecutor’s Office Trimo and Downing.
“And we have reached a practical arrangement or practical regulations which are the basis for implementing this prisoner transfer. Through this agreement, the Indonesian government has facilitated the transfer of two British citizen prisoners,” said Mataram.
Mataram explained that Lindsay was a convict in a narcotics case who received the death penalty and had been detained since August 29 2013 at the Kerobokan Class llA Women’s Prison.
“The person concerned has diabetes and high hypertension, which is one of the considerations in the transfer process,” he added.
Shahab is said to be a narcotics convict who was sentenced to life imprisonment and was detained on June 1 2015 at Nusakambangan Prison.
“The person concerned suffers from a personality disorder. Therefore, that is one consideration,” he said.
