“Yes, just check it, I think it can be checked, this is the point. You have all seen the President’s (Prabowo Subianto) statement at the cabinet meeting yesterday that those who violate it, there is no hesitation. The President will definitely take action against all of them, whoever it is, there is nothing that cannot be prosecuted,” said Sudaryono in a press conference at the Ministry of Agriculture Office, South Jakarta, Tuesday (16/12).
According to Sudaryono, Prabowo expressed an open and firm stance at the Cabinet Meeting at the State Palace which was broadcast live on Monday (15/12).He emphasized that the state would not hesitate to take action against any party proven to have violated the rules and caused a disaster.
“The President made a clear statement in a cabinet meeting, live on TV, in an open statement that anyone who violates and causes this disaster must be dealt with, investigated and their actions punished with appropriate punishment, something like that,” he said.
Previously, the Ministry of Environment (KLH) sealed and installed monitoring signs in the operational area of the plantation and palm oil mill of PT Tri Bahtera Srikandi (PT TBS), a subsidiary of PT Sago Nauli Plantation (PT SNP), in Central Tapanuli, North Sumatra. This step was taken after flash floods hit the area.
Minister of the Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated that the sealing was carried out to temporarily stop operations which were deemed to have the potential to worsen hydrological conditions and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. The Ministry of Environment found indications of land management practices that still need to be clarified through field verification.
Hanif said the sealing was temporary and would be lifted if the company could demonstrate that it had fulfilled its environmental obligations and had an adequate improvement plan. However, if serious violations are found, the administrative and law enforcement processes will continue according to the regulations.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Forestry is also conducting a comprehensive audit and evaluation of PT Toba Pulp Lestari Tbk for alleged links to the flood and landslide disasters in North Sumatra.
Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni said this step was a direct order from Prabowo, including the possibility of revoking or rationalizing business permits if they were proven to have violated them.
As context, Sumatra is one of the main centers for national oil palm plantations.Government data records that the area of oil palm plantations in Riau reaches around 3.37 million hectares, North Sumatra 1.57 million hectares, Aceh around 440 thousand hectares, and West Sumatra around 448 thousand hectares.
