Benjamin said that eradicating TB is not just a focus on treating sick patients.
He also said that TB disease was related to the socio-economic conditions of society.
“Because people are sick with TB because of nutritional factors, because their immune system is down. People are malnourished, people have uncontrolled diabetes, there are many factors. So there are also weak socio-economic conditions, so in slum areas there will definitely be high TB cases,” he said
He said there are around 1 million TB cases in Indonesia currently. The Ministry of Health is targeting 900 thousand cases to receive treatment this year
“To date, we have treated 700 thousand. We hope that by the end of the year it will reach 900 thousand. So, our goal now is that next year, if there is a target for TB, how many of them must be treated,” he said.
Benjamin emphasized the importance of finding TB cases so they can be treated.
“If it is found, it will be treated completely. If it is not found, many people will suddenly die everywhere. Imagine that there are more than 125 thousand people who have died. More people have died from TB than Covid, but we don’t think so,” he said.
