Watson and Francis Crick received world recognition in 1953 after publishing a major discovery regarding the structure of DNA in the form of a double helix, which became the basis for the development of modern molecular biology.
For this discovery, Watson, Crick, and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962.
However, Watson’s reputation was tarnished in the following years due to a number of racist statements he made openly, including comments about the relationship between race and intelligence. His statement drew widespread criticism and resulted in him being removed from various honorary positions in the academic world.
Despite this, his scientific legacy remains an important part of the history of modern science.
The discoveries of Watson and his colleagues opened the way for genetic research, gene therapy, and understanding of hereditary diseases.
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory expresses condolences for the death of this scientist who for more than half a century played a major role in the development of molecular biology research.
