Electric car
New ones sold in Australia are now required to make a sound when driving slowly. This provision was created as an ‘alarm’ to other road users regarding the existence of zero-emission cars so that traffic accident fatalities can be reduced.
According to the regulator, the sound obligation does not only apply to battery-based electric cars, but also hydrogen and hybrid.

The sound in this electric car is called the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS).The system allows artificial sounds to be played when vehicles are traveling at speeds of up to 20 km per hour, for example when passing through parking areas, intersections, house driveways and other areas shared by vehicles and pedestrians.
These regulations will be announced in 2024 and will come into force on 1 November 2025 for passenger cars, pickups, trucks and buses introduced to the Australian market.

However, the rules do not apply to vehicles that have been sold and used on the road.
Risk of accident
Hybrid cars, especially electric ones, are more difficult for pedestrians or cyclists to hear than cars with petrol or diesel engines which always make engine noise. The silence of the vehicle while driving increases the risk of accidents.
Research conducted by the advocacy organization Vision Australia, as Drive reported last year, found 35 percent of people who are blind or have low vision have experienced almost being hit or actually being hit by a silent vehicle.
The Federal Government estimates this rule could prevent 68 deaths, 2,675 serious injuries and 2,962 minor injuries by 2060. This will save social costs of around 208 million Australian dollars.
“The government has consulted on an impact analysis of the draft policy proposing mandatory implementation of AVAS on light vehicles, and the results received strong support from state and territory governments, the blind community and vehicle manufacturers,” said the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts in an official statement last year.
