Fadli Zon stated that the establishment of National History Day was a joint effort to provide an Indonesia-centric approach to understanding the nation’s journey. This is also the state’s effort to strengthen collective historical awareness, as well as affirm the identity of the Indonesian nation.
“The establishment of History Day refers to the events of the National History Seminar which took place on 14-17 December 1957 at Gadjah Mada University. At that time, newly independent Indonesia was carrying out national consolidation and at the same time starting to write its own history with an Indonesia-centric perspective,” said Fadli in his statement, Monday (15/12).
He conveyed this at the Soft Launching of the Indonesian History Book: National Dynamics in Global Currents in Jakarta, Sunday (14/12).
December 14 was chosen because it has important historical significance in the development of Indonesian historiography.
He explained that on that date, the first Indonesian History Seminar was held on 14-18 December 1957 at Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta.
The seminar marked the birth of awareness among Indonesian historians to write national history from an Indonesian or Indonesian-centric perspective, as an effort to break away from a colonial-centric perspective.
This awareness also developed in various national academic forums and resulted in the publication of six volumes of the Indonesian National History book in 1975.
This work later became the main reference for writing Indonesian national history and reflects the commitment of the Indonesian people to construct their historical narrative independently and scientifically.
It is stated that the establishment of History Day also reflects the commitment of the Ministry of Culture to be single and independent during the era of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s administration in providing recognition of historical events that have strategic significance for the Indonesian nation.
