Fadli said that the Ministry of Culture also intends to write the government’s official history regarding a number of special topics.
He touched on several of them, namely the history of independence, the war to defend independence, and the history of the kingdom.
“The history of Majapahit, the history of Padjadjaran, the history of Sriwijaya,” he said.
The writing of this Indonesian history book involved 112 historians from 34 universities in the country.
The updated Indonesian history book manuscript underwent public testing at the University of Indonesia on July 25, Lambung Mangkurat University on July 28, Padang State University on July 31, and Makassar State University on August 4.
The history book manuscript includes new findings and research results on Indonesian history.
Fadli said that the government needed to write history books from an Indonesian perspective, not from the perspective of the colonial government.
The project to rewrite Indonesian history led by Fadli Zon has drawn criticism and protests from various groups.
A number of people from various elements of society took action to reject the rewriting of history and the alleged whitening of the sins of the New Order in front of the Ministry of Culture, Jakarta, on June 26 2025.
This rejection was based on several main ideas, including that the plan to write Indonesian history was considered a massive project in the form of engineering the past of the Indonesian nation with a single interpretation.
The government’s writing of the country’s ‘official history’ is considered to have the potential to omit past historical facts, especially human rights violations
Historian and member of Commission
Bonnie said that history was not written just for the benefit of those in power.According to Bonnie, history should not selectively take one part but leave another part.
“Don’t write history through a power approach that is selective and partial to political considerations. If this happens, it’s better to just stop this history writing project,” said Bonnie when contacted, Wednesday (18/6).
He made this statement while criticizing the statement by the Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, who doubted the series of violence and mass rape against ethnic Chinese women during the May 1998 riots.
According to Bonnie, Fadli Zon’s subjective view cannot deny that the heartbreaking events in the ’98 tragedy never happened.
“What the Minister of Culture says doesn’t exist, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen,” said the PDIP politician.
Constitutional judge Arief Hidayat reminded that the rewriting of Indonesian history was carried out objectively and was not written by people in power.
This was conveyed by Arief in response to the government’s plans through the Ministry of Culture regarding the project to rewrite Indonesian history. The project has also recently come under scrutiny for omitting a number of chapters, especially those dealing with gross human rights violations.
“There is a saying, history is written by people in power. In order to write history, don’t use that saying. History must be written objectively, not written by people in power. That’s all,” said Arief to journalists in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, Monday (30/6).
