Minister of Culture (Menbud)
Fadli Zon
launched the book ‘Indonesian History: National Dynamics in Global Currents’ as the latest reference on Indonesian history released by the government.
“The making of this book is part of the state’s efforts to maintain collective memory and strengthen national identity through comprehensive historical writing, with an Indonesian perspective,” said Fadli Zon when delivering his remarks in Jakarta, Sunday (14/12).
He explained that the book “History of Indonesia: National Dynamics in Global Currents” was compiled in 10 volumes which charted the long journey of the Indonesian people, starting from the roots of Indonesian civilization, global interactions with India, China, Persia, the Middle East, to the West, the colonial period, the national movement, the struggle to defend independence, state consolidation, the New Order era, to reform and democratic consolidation until 2024.

According to Fadli, this book is not intended as the only historical reference, but rather a reference in democratic countries.
He realizes that historical writing is dynamic and open to discourse.
“If our history were written in full, it would probably have to be a hundred volumes. This book is

nation’s journey,” he said.
Fadli Zon further emphasized that the history book was compiled by experts and not written by the government.
He said that the process of writing the book involved 123 historians from 34 universities in Indonesia, facilitated by the Ministry of Culture through the Directorate of History.
“This was written by experts, Indonesian historians. If historians don’t write history, then how do we care for our nation’s collective memory?”he said.
He said that writing national history is a constitutional mandate, especially Article 32 paragraph (1) of the 1945 Constitution, which emphasizes the role of the state in advancing national culture amidst world civilization.
Fadli Zon said that the return of the Directorate of History was an important foundation for writing national history.
The directorate was revived after previously being inactive, following the establishment of the Ministry of Culture during the era of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration.
The launch of this book is also part of the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence, as well as an effort to present a reading of history from an Indonesian perspective, which is open to criticism and public input as the study of national history develops.
“This history book is expected to be a means of maintaining the nation’s collective memory, strengthening identity, and understanding Indonesia as part of global flows since the past,” he said.
