The fans
K-pop
urge their idol companies and concert promoters to immediately implement the principles of low-carbon and environmentally friendly concerts.
This call came from a climate monitoring organization from and for K-pop fans, KPOP4PLANET, through their report entitled
Low Carbon K-Pop Concerts: Sing Along for Our Future
, ahead of implementation
COP30
next week.

In the report, they urge K-pop industry players and those related to it to implement low carbon, in line with various international musicians who have started implementing it, such as Billie Eilish and Coldplay.
“Overseas artists have introduced new standards, and domestic fans’ interest in ongoing performances has also increased,” they wrote.”Coupled with internal demands for change in the industry, there is no reason to delay further.”
In the report received

on Friday (7/11), KPOP4PLANET quoted carbon emissions data from a concert in England in 2007 by Julie’s Bicycle which stated that there were around 540 thousand tons of greenhouse gases produced from music industry activities.
Of this amount, around 73 percent or the equivalent of 394 thousand tons came from live performances, aka concerts. This figure is equivalent to the carbon emissions from 92 thousand cars in a year.
Even though the figures come from the UK and are 18 years ago, KPOP4PLANET said emissions from concerts are expected to increase significantly in line with reports from promoter Live Nation Entertainment in 2023 which will hold 50 thousand concerts and involve 145 million spectators.
KPOP4PLANET feels that the K-pop industry must move in this regard because fans of South Korean music will reach 75 million people worldwide by 2023, according to data from the Korea Foundation.
Meanwhile, not many K-pop industry players care about this.Analyzing five major K-pop companies, namely HYBE, JYP, SM, YG, and CJ ENM, they found that only YG had started making real moves with environmentally friendly concerts. This also happened as BLACKPINK became ambassadors for COP26.
“BLACKPINK’s 2023 concert will be the first in the industry to measure carbon emissions from a performance and operate a climate education booth at the venue,” they wrote.
“In 2025, YG is working with IOM to purchase Peace Renewable Energy Certificates (P-REC) to offset part of BLACKPINK’s world tour electricity usage.”

On the other hand, KPOP4PLANET said K-pop fans also want their idols’ concerts to be environmentally friendly. This is based on their survey in 2021 which found that almost 5 thousand young people wanted to be involved in green concerts.
In addition, the Sustainable Performance Report from YG, quoted by KPOP4PLANET, found that eight out of 10 combined fans of BLACKPINK, AKMU and Treasure felt that “sustainable environmentally friendly appearance is important”.
“Compared to top international artists who set carbon reduction roadmaps from the performance planning stage and implement systematic reduction strategies in all areas, including stage design, equipment transportation and power use, K-pop’s efforts are still in their infancy,” they wrote.”Therefore, low-carbon concerts are both a crisis and an opportunity for K-pop.”
In this way, KPOP4PLANET provides five recommendations to K-pop industry players and those involved in realizing low-carbon and environmentally friendly concerts, namely:
Measure and disclose carbon emissions for all concert processes, and establish carbon reduction plans
Implement real emission reductions through the use of renewable energy
Delivering a clear message of climate action directly from artists to fans
Reduce and manage concert venue waste, including limiting the use of single-use plastics
Minimize carbon emissions from transportation.
