Former BAM administrator Datuk James Selvaraj believes that players also need to take responsibility for Malaysia’s failure to meet their gold medal target in
SEA Games 2025
.
Malaysia was only able to win one gold through Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan in the women’s doubles number. This record is far below the target they set, namely four gold medals.
With this failure, James thinks players also need to take responsibility.Malaysia’s failure to meet targets is not solely the coach’s failure.

“It’s unfair to put the blame entirely on the coach. Players are the last people standing in the arena and they also need to take responsibility.”
“There are many factors involved, namely training, pressure, mental health and also the role of sports psychology,” said James, who previously served as Director of Technical Performance at BAM.
In James’ view, considering the existing players, Malaysia will win at least three gold medals at the 2025 SEA Games.
“This result is surprising. All the best [Malaysian] players were there but we failed to win the gold medal that we should have won.”
“We should have at least [won] three gold medals. But in the end we only had one. So there has to be an evaluation. The administrators who handle coaching and achievements have to sit down and discuss what is causing this target not to be achieved,” said James.
James himself believes that Rexy Mainaky is still worthy of holding his position as Technical Director.
“For me, Rexy still needs to stay. He is a former world champion and knows what it takes to play at the top level.”
“This can be a challenge for him to get up and ensure the players’ performance returns to the best level.”
