In the process of going back and forth looking for help, Irene and her baby were declared dead before arriving at the Dok II Jayapura Regional Hospital.
The head of Hobong Village, Abraham Kabey, called this incident a major tragedy for his residents.
“We came asking for medical help, but didn’t get good service,” he said, quoted from Detik.
Irene’s husband, Neil Kabey, also highlighted the absence of a doctor on duty at this critical time.
“If there had been a doctor at the Yowari Regional Hospital at that time, I am sure my wife and child would still be alive,” said Neil.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) expressed its condolences and ensured a thorough investigation.Head of the Ministry of Health’s Communications and Public Information Bureau, Aji Muhawarman, emphasized that the central government will thoroughly investigate the report of alleged patient refusal.
“The Ministry of Health offers its condolences and deeply regrets the incident that occurred,” said Aji, Sunday (23/11)
A team from the Directorate General of Advanced Health will be sent to Papua to carry out examinations with the regional health service. All hospitals called families will be checked.
“If indications of violations are found, there will definitely be strict sanctions imposed on hospitals suspected of rejecting patients,” stressed Aji.
He also reminded that Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin had repeatedly emphasized that no hospital, whether government or private, should refuse patients in emergency conditions.
Aji added that the act of refusing a patient is not only a violation of professional ethics, but also violates the Health Law and can result in criminal sanctions.
The Governor of Papua, Matthew D. Fakhiri, expressed an open apology for the incident. He called this incident clear evidence of the still poor health services in Papua.
“I apologize and express my deepest condolences. This is extraordinary stupidity committed by the government,” said Fakhiri.
He promised to replace all hospital directors under the Papua Provincial Government and carry out a comprehensive evaluation, including repairing medical equipment which was widely reported to be damaged.
“We will call all directors of government and private hospitals to unite our vision. Serve patients first, then other matters,” he said.
