Rosan claimed to have met directly with the Freeport-McMoran Chairman Richard Adkerson and Freeport-McMoran Kathleen Quirk CEO during a visit to the United States (US).
Initially, continued Rosan, Indonesia targeted Freeport approved the divestment or release of shares of only 10 percent. However, for the negotiations conducted, Indonesia managed to get 12 percent of shares.
“And they have agreed to provide 12 percent shares, ‘Free of Charge’ (free of charge/free),” Rosan said.
In addition to agreeing to 12 percent divestment, Rosan also revealed that Freeport agreed to build two universities and two hospitals near its operational area, to increase the role of doctors there.
“Later two hospitals and two universities will be built there, in Papua,” said Rosan.
Divestment is one of Freeport’s requirements to extend the Special Mining Business License (IUPK) of production operations scheduled to end in 2041.
Government Regulation (PP) Number 25 of 2024 concerning the Implementation of Mineral and Coal Mining Business Activities said that the production operation IUPK could be given an extension after meeting a number of criteria.
One of the criteria is, an agreement to buy and sell new shares that cannot be diluted at least 10 percent of the total number of share ownership to SOEs.
The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia said that the divestment results will also be given to Papua Regional Owned Enterprises (BUMD), and will take effect in 2041.
Thus, the portion of government shares in PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) will increase from 51 percent to 63 percent.
