Gerindra Supports Suharto and Gus Dur Becomes a National Hero

The Secretary General (Sekjen) of the Gerindra Party, Sugiono, assessed that Suharto was a figure who made many contributions to the country.Apart from Suharto, said Sugiono, Gerindra also supports the title of hero for the fourth President of the Republic of Indonesia, Abdurrahman Wahid alias Gus Dur.
“In our opinion, both of them are successful leaders and have made great services to the Republic of Indonesia,” said Sugiono in his statement, Friday (7/11).

Sugiono said that Suharto made a big contribution in creating national stability and economic development.
According to him, many of Soeharto’s achievements benefited the Indonesian people.Starting from infrastructure development, education, transmigration to food security.
“I am sure that most of the leaders in Indonesia today are also people who grew up in their leadership situation and are the result of the fruit and hard work they did as a leader at that time,” he said.
Under Suharto, continued Sugiono, Indonesia became one of the Asian tigers, placing Indonesia in a strategic position.
“Economically, at that time we were also considered a large country, we were considered an Asian tiger and that put Indonesia in a strategic position,” he said.
Meanwhile, former President Abdurrahman Wahid is considered to have contributed a lot to Indonesia’s sustainability as a country after the turmoil in various regions.Gus Dur, said Sugiono, always prioritized democracy and pluralism, the benefits of which are felt to this day.
Sugiono views Gus Dur as having made many contributions in maintaining national stability and integrity, through the values of plurality and diversity.
“He is a visionary who thinks far ahead about how he can build and unite all components of society so that the unity of the Indonesian state is maintained,” said Sugiono.
Suharto and Gus Dur have been proposed to be included in the list of 40 names of national heroes.In fact, the Indonesian Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, stated that Suharto had fulfilled the requirements to receive the title of Hero.
Fadli claims that Suharto fulfills a number of requirements to become a national hero based on assessments from a number of parties included in the title and honors council.
“There are all kinds of people in it, there are historians, there are religious figures, there are academics, there are activists, yes, then, uh, the Ministry of Social Affairs brought them to us,” he said.
