Six people died in a stampede after a crowd of job seekers stormed the stadium gates during a military recruitment process

“This unfortunate incident resulted in the death of six potential recruits,” the Ghanaian military said in a statement, quoted by AFP.

The military said the incident occurred at around 06.20 local time, when an unexpected wave of applicants violated security protocols and stormed the stadium gates.When the gate opened, the applicants immediately rushed in, until some of them fell and were trampled.
Apart from the dead, 20 other people were also injured in the incident that occurred at the El-Wak Sports Stadium.Five of them are also in critical condition.
Following the incident, the Ghanaian military has suspended the recruitment process and formed a committee to investigate the causes of the incident.
At the 37th Military Hospital in the capital Accra, an atmosphere of grief was palpable as families crowded into the emergency room.Relatives cried while holding tightly to the victims’ cellphones and identity cards.
Ghana’s President, John Mahama, said he had mandated that recruitment be open so that young people across the country can have equal access to join the military.
