Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Wamendikdasmen), Fajar Riza Ul Haq said discussions regarding this matter had been carried out internally at the Ministry of Education and Culture, and involved Commission X DPR RI.

According to Fajar, Portuguese has strategic value to be taught in schools, especially because it has historical and cultural proximity to a number of regions in Indonesia.
“We realize that Portuguese will indeed be one of the languages of instruction in the context of international conversation, especially since some of our regions have historical ties with Portugal. For example, in East Nusa Tenggara and several regions of Eastern Indonesia, which are also culturally close. In fact, there is a lot of absorption of Portuguese into Indonesian,” he explained.
However, Fajar emphasized that the government is still considering various aspects before determining this policy, including the availability of human resources and teaching staff.
“We are also considering the availability of human resources. As far as I know, not many campuses in Indonesia have Portuguese language education study programs. We are currently looking at how to fulfill them,” he said.
Fajar said that the president’s direction regarding the importance of strengthening foreign languages, including Portuguese, had been followed up through internal meetings at the ministry.
“Essentially, we have followed up on the President’s attention. Now we are formulating the most appropriate formula,” he said.
