“I really don’t agree if Suharto is made a National Hero,” said Gus Mus at his residence in Leteh, Rembang, Central Java, as reported by
NU Online,
Sunday (9/11).
He said that many Islamic boarding school and NU clerics were treated unfairly during Soeharto’s rule.

“Many kiai used to struggle, but their families did not want to apply for the title of hero. The reason was so that their good deeds would not diminish in the eyes of Allah. In other words, avoiding riya’,” said Rais Aam PBNU 2014-2015.
The caretaker of the Raudlatut Thalibin Islamic Boarding School, Leteh, Rembang, Central Java, said that NU people who agreed that Suharto was a hero showed a lack of understanding of history.
Gus Mus made this statement regarding the many tragedies during the New Order era in which kiai, Islamic boarding school students and NU residents were the victims.
“If NU people join in with this suggestion, it means they don’t understand history,” he said.
Suharto was included in the list of 40 names proposed as national heroes.The list of names has been officially submitted to the Minister of Culture and Chairman of the Council for Degrees, Service and Honors (GTK) Fadli Zon at the Ministry of Culture Office, Jakarta, Tuesday (21/10).
The proposal raises pros and cons.PDIP and the civil society coalition are among those who reject it.Then Gerindra and NasDem supported the proposal.Gerindra considers Suharto to be a figure who has contributed to the country.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Social Affairs (Mensos) Saifullah Yusuf alias Gus Ipul said that the names proposed, including Suharto, had met the requirements.
“Regarding the title of hero, of course it will be announced at the right time. All processes have been passed in stages from the bottom to the top. Whoever the President (Prabowo Subianto) decides, all of them have been declared to have met the requirements,” said Gus Ipul.
The Palace has opened its voice on this issue.Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said that the pros and cons of Suharto’s proposal to become a national hero were commonplace in democratic life.
“So it’s like this, regarding the title of hero, of course we go through all the procedures. That there are pros and cons, that some may agree or not is part of the aspiration,” said Pras at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Friday (7/11).
Even so, Pras invited all parties to view things from a positive perspective.
Especially, when it comes to previous leaders.He said that we as the nation’s successors must respect their services.
“Let’s reduce our efforts to always see the shortcomings,” he said.
